"You've found a body... with a wallet sticking out of its pocket"

Using this scenario we can look into what hypothetical things you would do.

Where could it be?

  • Forest.

  • Abandoned house/derelict building

  • At a quiet train station.

  • A beach

Who would you tell?

  • Police

  • Family

  • Friends

  • People in the area to warn them.

Who will you tell first and why?

I would tell the police first as it would likely be a shocking and scary discovery that would need police action. Then the police could take control of the situation and sort out what needs to happen and what occurs in the process.

What will you do about it?

When I first found the body and the wallet I would call the police as my first action as it would be the first thing to come to mind. I would not touch anything (the wallet) and leave it how I found it.

What elements of conflict?

An internal conflict could be the mental effects on finding the body afterwards. For example, the questions that the police will ask (why were you in the area etc.) may make you feel scared or worried incase it incriminates yourself. You may experience PTSD and have flash backs to the body as it was distressing.

An external conflict could be others pinning you as having something to do with it as you were the one who "conveniently" found it. When a body is found in a shocking place people often will talk about it and rumors begin. This could lace you into it.

Write up three scenes demonstrating the conflict.

  1. Forest: Either early in the day or late at night, on a dog walk, following the usual route that you would take, dog could start sniffing something and you have headphones in so am in your own world, the dog could begin barking which alerts you, your walk over and find the body, shock starts and then you notice the wallet full of money, a quick brief thought washes over you that if you took some money out of it nobody would notice but decide against it as it is morally wrong, you then call the police.

  2. Derelict building: Night time, could be set on Halloween to increase tension and shows conflict with the character being on edge because it's Halloween. The character could be exploring the building, the building could be well hidden and not many people know about it so they could be filming what they find to share on youtube. Very dark (lowkey lighting), character has a flash light to see around the building. Character walks down a hallway and starts to smell something, the audience can tell its not a nice smell due to the facial expressions the character makes. They kick open a door that is open ajar, shines the touch and sees the body. First they are shocked, then spots the wallet. A bang is heard which scares the character and makes them look around, a £50 pokes out of the pocket and the character snatches it quickly, puts it in their pocket and then calls the police.

  3. Quiet train station: Late at night, character gets off a small (4 carriage) train, train station is a small town station with only 2 platforms and a ticket office. Everywhere is closed and no one else is around. A singular lamp post creates all the light available, it flickers on and off. There is only one exit to the station so the character must go over the bridge to get to the other side. As the character reaches the top of the stairs there is a body lying across the path. The character is at a loss for words and is slightly scared. The character doesn't want to look at the body so immediately phones the police - not noticing the money hanging out of the pocket.
