Operator

Operator is a short film following a emergency fire dispatcher. She receives a call from a mother called Gemma whos house is on fire whilst her 3 year old son Jamie is trapped upstairs. Gemma is extremely scared and the operator try's to calm her down whilst sending a team out to her.

In the short film, the main character is Maura the dispatcher. She receives a call from a lady called Gemma who is in distress as a fire has broken out in her house.

In the short film, the audience can infer a range of things about the operator. We see her try to keep others calm whilst trying to keep herself calm and in control of the situation. We see her run through a range of questions that she asks over every call "can you tell me your address" "can you confirm your address", "where in the house are you", "are you at the front of the house", "where is your son".

The conflicts that are shown are the fact that there is two people in the house, trying to get to them. Another conflict could be that the mother disobeys the operator and goes upstairs to save her son - leaving two people in one room, inferring there is more of a loss of oxygen.

The dispatcher and the mother relived as the mother and son is together and safe in the moment. They are also relived as there is a small window to get the smoke out and that the sound of sirens is heard in the background.

Three acts structure.

The three acts structure is used in this short film to show the beginning, the build up the climax and the end. When the film starts we have a contextual moment where we see the location is set in a dispatch center and hear the calls of other 999 operators. The hook begins by the sound of Gemma on the phone to Maura the operator. She explains the situation quite choppily and Maura try's to get all the points of information. This hooks the viewer in as they want to know if the mother and son make it out okay and get the help they need. The inciting incident would be when the mother goes upstairs to get the son as this raises the tension as the operator told her not to. This makes the stakes higher as there is more at risk now. The calm down point would be where she opens the window and the fire brigade is heard.
